CPCE President Friedrich Weber has died

The sad news of the passing of CPCE President Friedrich Weber this Monday night was received with shock and dismay by Gottfried Locher, Council President of the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches, and employees in the head office that had met with him only recently. “Friedrich Weber was a distinctive thinker. He put his heart and soul into leading and representing our community of churches,” reminisces Gottfried Locher: “I am losing an ecumenical friend.”

In 2012, Friedrich Weber, who at the time was Regional Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick, was elected President of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE). On the same day, Gottfried Locher was also elected to join the CPCE Presidium. Friedrich Weber was firmly committed to the promotion of ecumenism, not only because cordial ecumenical relations are in keeping with the times, but most of all because they are in keeping with the Gospel.

Friedrich Weber was an indefatigable proponent of reconciliation between the churches, for reconciliation with the Catholics and the Anglicans, but also for an internal ecumenism among Protestants. “We will miss him very much and extend our deepest condolences to his wife and family,” Locher said.
