SCR and FSPC demonstrate support for the freedom of opinion

Following the attack on the office of the Charlie Hebdo satire magazine in Paris last week, the Swiss Council of Religions (SCR) has spoken out in support of the freedom of the press, opinion, and artistic expression. The Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (FSPC) stands firmly behind the SCR statement in this regard.

The statement of the Swiss Council of Religions:

SCR shows its support for the freedom of the press, opinion, and artistic expression

St. Gallen, 8 January 2015

The Swiss Council of Religions (SCR) is deeply shocked by last week’s murderous attack on the staff of the Charlie Hebdo satire magazine in Paris, in which twelve people were killed and numerous others injured.

The Swiss Council of Religions (SCR) extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the murdered cartoonists, editors, and police officers.

The Swiss Council of Religions (SCR) firmly supports the freedom of the press, opinion, and artistic expression, and condemns the attacks in the strongest possible terms.

The Swiss Council of Religions (SCR) hopes that this cowardly attack will not threaten the religious peace in Switzerland and throughout the world, and asks all forces of moderation to work to ensure that this event does not drive a wedge between the religions. The Swiss Council of Religions (SCR) will play its part in this process.

On behalf of the Swiss Council of Religions

Dr. Hisham Maizar, SCR Chairman

The Swiss Council of Religions (SCR) is made up of leaders of Switzerland’s three main Christian churches, Jewish community, Orthodox Christian churches, and Islamic organizations, as mandated by their respective governing boards.
