Swiss Churches to pray together on eve of Federal Day of Thanksgiving, Repentance and Prayer

Various churches and religious organizations in Switzerland invite the Swiss people to join in public prayer on September 19, the day before the Federal Day of Thanksgiving, Repentance and Prayer, in Bern. The umbrella organizations of the Swiss churches are cooperating to create this occasion. After its inception in 2013, the event at Grosse Schanze above Bern Main Station is now held for the second time.

On September 19, Christians from various denominations, liturgical traditions and Swiss regions will gather on Grosse Schanze in Bern for a prayer event. For more than 200 years, Switzerland has had a Prayer Day on which Christians, regardless of denomination, are called upon by the government to pray for the welfare of the nation. With their public prayer in Bern, they want to express their shared willingness to take on responsibility for the country and the people who live in it.

Prayer for people in Switzerland

In this prayer event, Christians turn to God in spoken and silent prayer to ask for the country’s continued subsistence, for social change, for political issues, for cultural and economic life, for the preservation of the natural environment, for peace, freedom and solidarity.  They declare their individual and shared willingness to dedicate their efforts to the country and its people, heeding God’s word and acting with courage, in reverence and with God’s help.

Wide range of participating organizations

During the event, various public figures from the areas of politics, business, culture and church will give short statements on the occasion of Prayer Day. An intercultural music group will play.

The event starts at 10:15am and will end around 12:15pm. It is organized by the Council of Christian Churches in Switzerland (AGCK) in cooperation with the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (FSPC) and the Swiss Bishops’ Conference (SBK), the Swiss Evangelical Alliance (SEA-RES), the Swiss Free Churches (VFG) and the organization “Prayer for Switzerland.”
